Place value becomes much more interesting when every roll creates a decision. The High Roller Place Value Game turns number sense into a quick strategy challenge that works at school, at home, or anywhere students have a pencil and a ten-sided die.
Players are not simply writing numbers. They are deciding where each digit will have the greatest impact, comparing possible outcomes, and thinking ahead while the board slowly fills.

What you need
- A printed High Roller game board for two players
- One ten-sided die numbered 0-9
- A pencil for each player
- The optional turn-in sheet for written reflection
How to play High Roller
- Write each player’s name beside a game board.
- Take turns rolling the ten-sided die. The digit rolled must be used on that turn.
- Choose an open place-value space. Write the rolled digit in any unfilled box on your own board.
- Think strategically. High digits are usually most valuable toward the left, but waiting for the perfect roll can leave an awkward space later.
- Continue until every place is filled. Both players read and compare the numbers they constructed.
- The highest number wins.
The rules are simple enough to learn in one round, but every roll creates useful mathematical reasoning: Where should a 9 go? Is a 5 strong enough for the millions place? What happens if the last open space is the most valuable one?

Use it as a math center game
Place laminated boards, dry-erase markers, and a ten-sided die in a math-center bin. Pairs can play independently once the class has completed one demonstration round.
Ask students to read both completed numbers aloud before declaring a winner. For stronger accountability, add the turn-in sheet: players write both scores in word form and expanded form, then explain one strategic choice.
Turn recess into a friendly challenge
High Roller also works as an optional indoor-recess or rainy-day game. It feels competitive without requiring speed, and one game is short enough for students to finish during a typical break.
Keep several grayscale copies and a die in a labeled envelope. Students can play in pairs, challenge a new opponent, or run a simple classroom tournament.
Keep it ready for filler time
Those unexpected five-to-ten-minute gaps can become useful number-sense practice. Project one board, roll a digital or physical ten-sided die, and let the whole class decide where each digit should go.
For a richer discussion, ask students to defend two different placements before the class votes. There may not be one perfect answer, which is exactly what makes the reasoning valuable.
Send it home for homework
Instead of another page of isolated place-value questions, send home a board and invite students to teach the game to a parent, caregiver, or sibling. The student becomes the expert while the family gets a short, low-pressure way to practice together.
The reflection sheet can serve as the homework record. Students return the two final numbers in word and expanded form and write a sentence explaining the most important decision in the game.

Easy ways to adjust the challenge
- Use fewer places: Cover some columns for students working with smaller numbers.
- Try Low Roller: The smallest completed number wins, reversing the usual strategy.
- Play cooperatively: Partners build one number together and explain every placement.
- Require comparisons: Write the completed numbers with >, <, or = before checking the winner.
- Estimate first: Before the final roll, predict the likely winning number and explain why.
Why the game works
High Roller gives repeated place-value practice without making students repeat the same kind of problem. Each round asks them to apply what they know in a changing situation. They compare digits, consider magnitude, revise a plan, and explain their reasoning.
